If you are ever struggling with motivation, you should reflect on all your previous successes. For example, look back at how you couldn’t complete a 5K run and now you are achieving 10K runs. Look at how your times are improving on average. All of this helps to keep you motivated and keep that discipline to help achieve your long-term goal.

No matter what your long-term goals are, it is the process you should use to keep up your motivation. A common mistake for many people is that they aim for the finished product and don’t acknowledge the process. That is why they become demotivated because they don’t recognise the process.

During the process, you learn a lot. You learn from your mistakes and the things that you can do better. You can then use this for other goals and help you understand the process even more. Once you do this, that end goal makes your achievements even better.

A great example would be when you are on holiday. If you are going somewhere, you don’t try and get there as quickly as possible. Instead, you enjoy the journey there and make a mental note of places you can go the next day. However, if you rush on the way to your final destination, you are not going to enjoy the journey.

The skill of accepting praise is the next step to why you should celebrate your small wins. That includes accepting self-praise and accepting praise from friends and family. Don’t be the person who deflects praise and be the person who acknowledges it.

To celebrate your small wins, all you need to do is smile at yourself or pat yourself on the back. Yes, you might feel stupid giving yourself this praise but soon, it will become natural.

Now that you understand the importance of celebrating your small wins, it is time to look back at your previous successes. It could be anything such as celebrating by going to the gym early in the morning before work, especially if this isn’t normal for you.

It could be achieving a 5K run in a record-breaking time or receiving a pay rise at work. No matter what it is, you should celebrate that achievement.

Once you have made a list of your quick wins, find a relevant way to celebrate it. There is no issue with that. Just make sure whatever you do doesn’t go below your intended goal.
